I have a 2000 Hunter 340 and I am wondering what is the best way to clean and maintain the grey rubber rub rails. I have experimented with acetone and that takes off all the black marks and dirt, but I wonder if I am doing any harm with something as strong a solvent as acetone. And I also wonder what I can put on to protect and seal the rub rails. Any ideas?

soft scrub

We used soft scrub on a green scratchy pad. Did this on a 1996 HUN336. Looked like new when done. Didn't use too much pressure and washed soft scrub off when done. Used Island Girl to seal. I imagine that somthing like Armour All would work just as well. Bottle would state if it protects from u.v.

Check archives

This topic is well covered in the archives. One message came through loud and clear, don't use acetone. It disolves the surface layer and when it dries any dirt dries in the surface. I use inflatable dinghy cleaner. works great. Try patio furniture cleaner. Russell

Greased Lightning

This product comes in a spray bottle and will make your grey rub rails look like new. It's available in a Marine version "Marine Greased Lightning" this year, but you can also find it in the supermarket. Think I picked it up at West Marine or Boat US. Spray on. Let it sit for a minute. Wipe off. Makes the rub rail like new!

Its like magic on the gray rubrails, plastic cowl vents and lifelines as well as on the inflteable dingy.

Rub rail

Marine Spray Nine works well and is available at Boat US. After cleaning, seal the rub rail with several coats of wax and it will remain looking new for a long time.
