Those lucky unlucky fishermen.

By the look of their boat, they lost their engine, for whatever reason and drifted father and father out to sea with no way of getting home or contacting anyone. They probably didn't plan to get out more than a mile off the coast. There's an example of why it's important to be prepared even if it's just a quick little afternoon snapper fishing 5000' of shore.

It seems like the weather really wanted those guys to survive.

That boat looks like a big Jon Boat. It doesn't appear to have any shelter at all. Amazing to survive 20 days in that. Good on Empress of the Seas for the rescue.
