The 2GM20 on my 92H30 turns over and starts OK, but runs very rough for about a 30 to 60 seconds before kicking in and running smoothly. This usually happens on the 1st start up after a weeks lay-off. Subsequent starts are no problem.I've checked the fuel vent which is OK and tried throttling up before starting. Any suggestions? Thanks

Normal

Sounds normal first 30 seconds starting taking 30 seconds for the fuel flow,if it only does this for a short few seconds than it is OK. If it runs rough for longer like while waiting at the slip before leaving than it could mean further checking into. Nick

that's normal for a diesel..

after the combustion chamber heats up enough the racket quiets down.

I beg to differ...

our Yanmar 4JH starts every time after two cranks regardless of the temperature (no glow plugs) and purrs like a kitten from the start. The 2GM on our first boat did the same except it required lots of throttle and several cranks before she started when cold. Once started she ran smooth. Terry

2GM20F Starting

The 'normal' starting situation in anything but cold weather is 2-5 seconds of cranking to start. More than 10 seconds of cranking and I'd be looking to solve the problem ASSAP. A few seconds of valve noise as the oil starts to circulate may be 'normal', but 30 seconds of rough idle sounds like you should be trouble shooting the fuel lines and filters, followed by having the injectors tested. Have you also checked the injection elbow?

Starts right up

You did say starts right up and no hard starting. When did you last change fuel filters,I think you should not touch a thing unless there is more to the story, don't touch it if it's not broke. Nick

Mine too

I've had 2 GM20fs now and they all knock like crazy for a minute before they even out.

I change the fuel filter and Racor every year. I'm going with 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it!'
