If you own a Yanmar 30hp 3 cylinder diesel does it run rough below 1000rpm's? I always thought this was natural, but recently I've been told that it should run a lot smoother than it does.. It starts fine, but bangs and clatters below 1000rpm's. Thanks Ron

Rough Yanmar.

Hi Ron, Seeing that you have received no responses here's my two cents even though I have the 2-cyl, 2QM20. The problem is the definition of "rough". Mine is a little more rough in the 1000 to 1200 range. But it doesn't ever seem unreasonable for a diesel. There's a lot of info in the archives about worn motor mounts, worn cutlass bearings, misaligned shafts, and out-of-balance props. But I never motor more than fifteen minutes at a time so maybe I'm not noticing it.

Yes, it is rough!

Our boat has always been freshwater and the diesel hasn't been run so many hours, but yes, it does vibrate. Would be terrible on the Intercoastal. GW
