Has anyone had problems with the plywood bulkhead rotting out that separates the fuel /waste storage compartment and the compartments in the swim platform area? Is this common? Does it pose any problems?

Sam

Had a similar problem on my 37.5 which was identified in the pre-purchase survey fortunately. We got a price concession, but the cost of repair which was significant was greater than the price concession. Our problem was in the bulkhead between the aft cabin and the compartment that houses the holding and fuel tanks. It resulted from water leaks through improperly bedded fasteners in the cockpit sole around the base of the steering pedestal and steering quadrant cover and took a long time to develop. I felt it compromised the strength of the hull (so did the surveyor) as that bulkhead provides lateral strength. Based on the conditions in which we use our boat, I felt compelled to fix it. It may not be a big problem with light use. Hope this helps. Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust h37.5

Gary, Thanks for the reply. I don’t think the area is structural, but I’ve scheduled a marine survey for a second opinion. If he agrees I’ll be a new owner of a Hunter 29.5. Thanks again, --- Sam

Guys

I had exactly the same problem with my 35.5. Water leaked in where the wiring from the pedestal passed through the cockpit floor and found its way down to the same bulkhead. I simply cut the damaged parts away and made a new pair of access doors after replacing the holding tank and plumbing as well as sealing the leak in the floor of the cockpit. Took a little time but not a big deal. Considering that this bulkhead is held in place by a few simple screws I must disagree with the idea that this is an integral bearing wall.
