Hello, I have a 23' '73 O'Day. This will be my fifth season with it and hopfully this one will be as much fun as the rest. My question is, the halyards I got with it are 30'cable and 30' line and need to be replaced. I would like to go to 5/16 all line (sta). The rollors on the mask head seem to roll smother with line and I think all line would cause less chaf on the sails. (also its cheaper). Anyone know of any problems with this setup? Aso I would like to buy just line and tie bowline knots for the shackles and tape over. (I am a cheap one). Thanks all and good Sailing

Cable vs Line

Go for lo-stretch line, Sta-SetX or similar. And go for the splice. If you cannot do the splice West Marine will do a great job for modest cost.

Go Sta-set

Brian, I never did like cable splices. I would much perfer a continious halyard that I know is almost capable of picking up the boat. r.w.landau

Halyards

Just a thought - I like to use my halyards as cranes when necessary, so I tend to get the highest SWL I can fit through the sheaves. That usually means spectra or kevlar lines. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
