As we are restoring our Matilda 20 I was wondering what you all think about replacing cleats with a rope clutch for the foresail and mainsail halyards? I would like to clean up the cabin deck. Thank you for your interest I have learned much through this forum.

Clutch vs. cleat

Lines have a tendency to pop out of the jam cleat at the worst possible moment. You could try one as an experiment and go from there.

Clutches !!!

My H260 came with clutches for the haulyards. I hated the jib sheet cam cleats, so I replaced them with clutches. Life is good!

Clutches? We don't need no stinking clutches!

Dan, Checkout the Spinlock on David Clark's recent 26X modification. (related link) There are more examples linked on the Modifications Page. Happy sails _/), MArk

I use Garhauer (link to web my page)

...for my halyards and all other lines with the exception of my traveler control lines. For those I used Spinlock Power Cleats. Pictures on my web page (linkage below). Cheers, Bob

Clutches Contain Chaos!

How's *that* for alliteration?!? Seriously, I added clutches as primaries forward of the jam cleats & kept the jam cleats as back up. I picked them up used at a swap meet for $10 each and they work just great! They're not the highest tech ones on the market but the difference in price wouldn't have been worth it. LaDonna

Added clutches

for main and jib halyards. They are on opposite sides of the mast ahead of the halyard winches. They free the winches for other uses, specifically, outhaul and reefing lines. It is now possible to get a beautiful flat reef no matter how hard the wind is blowing. The boat is an O'Day 37. The clutches are Spinlocks siide mounted to the mast.
