Rolling Furler Types

Santa brought some extra money this year... Just finished replacing all the standing rigging on my 1979 22, to include new 1/2" chainplates and backstay transom eyebolt. Had planned on new sails and possible roller furling sometime in the next year or so. No longer a problem. My initial take on reading this forum's archives and then leafing through the Catalina Direct binder is to go with Offshore Sails (mainsail and 135% Furling Genoa) and the Schaefer Snapfurl system. My biggest concern in the roller furling (I have an original hank-on working jib). The Offshore sails have the foam luff everyone says is needed to maintain sail shape. The Schaefer Snapfurl seems to allow for use as reefing. The boat does not race, is in a slip (so only once a year haulout issues for raising and lowering mast), and is often singlehanded. Before I commit - anyone have any thoughts...? SJK SENDS

shop around

If you are interested in discount type sails for general sailing, you can find some excellent packages for your C22 by shopping around online. Try www.cruisingdirect.com. They are owned by North Sails and offer deeply discounted sails of pretty good quality. Also you might take a look at www.thesailwarehouse.com. They, like a lot of othere manufacturers, carry pre cut sails for the popular cat 22. They're not name brand sails, but neither is "offshore" so I'm sure you'll find them more than adequate for your needs, and the prices are excellent. For instance, in the 2003 catalogue, they offer a furling package for the Cat 22 that includes a CDI furler, foil, replacement headstay, 150% genoa with UV cover, lead block kit, furling line and a set of sheets for $1,098. You'll pay extra to have a luff pad sewn in, you can also opt for the 135% for a bit less. I've had good experience with Air Force Sails (ordered through www.sailnet.com) and with the CruisingDirect folks. The prices are excellent. The quality is good.

Trye CDI

I bought a CDI, with a 150% genoa from Airforce sails. The dacron is 5.9 oz, and the genoa has sunbrella and foam luff, along with a strap for securing the furled sail while in dock, and asail bag. I did not get new sheets. I talked to several sail makers before buying. The consensus was to use the heavier fabric because a less expensive, lighter weight would stretch out easier. I sail on a smaller lake than your Lake Mead, and still reef frequently. i just ordered a new mainsail for my '75 C22 from Airforce Sails. Call the toll free number in the attached link and speak to Bill James. He has been very helpful.

I bought a Snapfurl from riggingonly.com and the price and service was terrific. The 150 sail I ordered from CD as I am very happy with the main I bought from them.
