I have read a lot about rolling furlers for mainsails on many other models. Does anyone out there know if one is available for an older Hunter 27, and, if so, about how much something like that would cost? Thanks to one and all for your wisdom.

They are available after market. the cost for a Hunter 23.5 is about $7000 for the mast and parts plus installation, you also need a new main. The cost for your boat will be significantly more. For me the total cost was more than the value of my boat.

I think they do the roller furling masts for the new Hunters. We have been impressed by the roller furling on a 340 we chartered last summer. We are still comfortable hoisting our main. But we will seriously consider in mast furling when we are not. As for the cost, we already have spent much more on Lady Lillie than we will ever get out of her. The real question is: "What boat do you want to be sailing?" Even if we added a furling main, the total cost would be less than a third of the cost of a newer hull with that feature. And we really prefer the classic lines and ride of the Cherubini design. David Lady Lillie '77 h27

Consider boom furler.
It would still cost over $5000. but I would choose boom furling over mast furling. Better sail with full battens and big roach and much safer. Tom, There are several on the market to retrofit to your mast and size boat. Facnor, Forespar EZ-Furl, and Seldon(Furlex). They range in price starting with Facnor at the bottom. The design, mounting and finished look varies with each. Check them all out. The other post's are correct in the fact that a new Mainsail will be needed for use in any of these furlers, but that is the least of the expenses incurred between, the unit cost, installation and sail. If you like your boat and plan on keeping her, then check these out. They are generally much less expensive than furling booms.
