Roller main problem

Just purchased a new Hunter 27 ( 2009 ). It has the roller furling main and I am having a devil of a time getting the new main to unfurl. I know of another 27 with the furling main and the owner says he has the same problem.

Anyone familiar with this problem and would appreciate any inputs on this.

If its new I'd check with your dealer. They should be able to help, if they can't, call Hunter (and find another dealer the next time you buy a boat).

Did the dealer go through furling and unfurling with you on delivery. There shouldn't be any jamming. My 33 comes out and furls with no problem at all, no jams. How are you trying to unfurl. You should be pulling on the outhaul while holding tension on the inhaul. To furl the sail you should be pulling the "Furl In" while keeping tension on the outhaul.

Give your dealer a call and get them to go through it with you again.

Do you have tension on the line (the one that deploys the sail) when furling it? It needs to be snug when you furl it. Otherwise you basically have too much bulk inside the mast.

We had a similar problem on a GibSea 43. It ended up that the sail was stretched and ultimately needed to be replaced. You sails may be defective, so I would contact your dealer (as recommended) and have this resolved with a new sail or some training.

Could be a few things.
Is the sail pulled in to the mast too much,is the halyard tension properly set.
The sail needs to be furled back into the mast with tension so that the sail does not bunch up,it needs to be furled into the mast basically tight and not loose,if this is not done than this could be why it is hard to unfurl.
Call the dealer to have them check every thing.

I used to have a 27 (Hull #1) prior to my present boat and we too thought there was an issue with the furling system. It was not "smooth". We went back to the dealer and he found nothing wrong with it. Not saying that there isn't anything wrong with yours. Do not adjust the halyard tension while it is inside the furler or you will never be able to unfurl it again. You can adjust the height of the boom using the topping lift. This will make it easier/harder. Make sure the furling line is loose when pulling on the outhaul.
On a separate subject make sure you alway keep the mainsheet clear of the throttle. On our boat it wrapped itself around the throttle on a tack once and ripped the throttle right off. We ended up moving the handle clockwise so when it was wide open it was pointing straight up.

Two important things with Roller Furler

Keep tension on the outhaul when rolling up and make sure the main halyard has plenty of tension.

Try rolling with a lot of tension on the outhaul and then try unrolling again.

With the two things set right above, then the roller furler works just fine.

if your mast is bend too much that could jam the furler. in-mast furler should have little pre-bend on mast.
