Having trouble with our roller furling. Does anyone know what kind is on a 1984 hunter 25.5? Also need to know how to tune rigging. Anyone know what to tension shrouds and back stay?

Your roller furling is not original equipment so you will have to figure out what brand. Try asking other sailors or post a close-up photo on this site, somebody will recognize it. Also on this site is a page that discusses tuning the B&R rig. Also try www.briontoss.com

25.5 furlers

TTBOMK, 25.5s mostly had Schaefer or CDI furlers. But it might be a Harken. The pressure of the halyard pulling hard against the luff of the jib might be causeing the bearings in the swivel to bind up. That might not show up unless you hoist the jib. Might only need a little cleaning and lube in the swivel. Also, try easing off the haylard to see of that helps.

Tuning 25.5

I tune our 25.5 by hand. I make sure everything stays vertical with about one to one and a half mast widths of aft rake. Then I gradually tighten the rigging until the shrouds are about the same tension as the Catalina 27 next to us (Tom Monroe on this forum). Then I sail the boat. When I return, I check the rigging and vertilicality. If the lee shrouds were loose while sailing, I tighten everything, but try to maintain the same rake. This results in a very light tiller touch (almost no tiller pressure) when sailing a close reach in less than 8 knots of wind flying the 150 genoa and main. When the wind picks up, so does the weather helm, but it keeps pretty managable without a lot of heavy tiller force. YMMV. I'm probably making a mistake by not measuring shroud tension, but we're on an inland lake, we don't sail in heavy conditions and drop the sails / head in quickly under power if a storm starts to kick up.
