I was watching a roller furling system on e-bay and in the description it said "Use for a simple wire luff headsail furling system". I not sure what this means. I am fairly new to sailing and I would like to get a roller furling for 77 hunter 27. Can anyone explain what it would take to make the system described above work on my boat?

Without knowing more such as the brand and model number, it is hard to say. But, typically furlers using wire luff sails are generally for free flying sails such as Code Zero type sails, or for small boats. I doubt it would be suitable for your boat. To find out what would be appropriate for your boat, go to the Harken, Profurl or CDI websites, or an online reseller such as Sail Warehouse. For your boat, if you don't race, the CDI furlers are probably the most affordable best bet. Also, for this type of equipment I would either buy new or only buy used if you can see and test the furler before you buy. Used furlers can be plagued by worn bearings, bent or damaged foils and drums, or other problems. Before you know it, the cost of the used unit plus the cost of new parts could exceed the cost of a new warranted unit. I would also recommend having someone with experience do the install.

Just don't do it

Save yourself a lot of trouble and just get one with a proper headfoil.
