ROLLER FURLING

I still have the old streamstay roller furling for the headsail, which I recently cleaned and repacked the lower unit. Unfortunately, it still binds about the same when the tension is put back on the forestay. The bearings still looked ok on visual inspection, so does this mean the problem might be at the masthead? Any ideas on what I might be missing?

A thought or two.

Hi Peter, did you only lube the lower bearings in the drum? In other words the halyard swivel was still at the top? I have only ever greased all the bearings, in the Spring before I bend on the yankee. My '79 Streamstay still works smoothly. Have you tried reducing halyard tension to see if that makes a difference? I wonder if sail stretch has let the top swivel jam against the cone at the top. Seems that if you turned the drum by hand at the furler you might get a sense of where the resistance is coming from, top or bottom. I'll check mine more closely on Wednesday and see if I can spot a problem area. It is horizontal on a mast rack.How do you feel about having that old solid-rod furler holding up your mast? I've begun to think about replacing mine. I'd start with a 5/16" headstay. Not sure about furler make or model.

Furling Problems Submitted by Michael McMahon of Bayfield Ont. on 05/07 at 03:26PM regarding General_interest. I have the Stream Stay furling on my 1985 h31. It does not work well. I am looking for information on how to lubricate or sevice this unit. Any info would help. If anyone has a diagram of the workings of this unit that would be great.

Halyard swivel bearings

When my roller furler started binding I had to replace the bearings in the halyard swivel. They were all ground up like pebbles. No problems after that.
