roller furling

I ordered a new jib for a roller furling rig (on my hunter 25). The sail maker advised me to turn over the rigging to the boat yard and let him know what brand and he would make the sail to fit. The boat yard has yet to reply to my request and I am thinking how hard can it be. So my question is how hard is it? I am looking at a Harken 1110 which seems right for my boat. Does anyone have an opinion about brands/models? Thanks to everyone who responded to my question re. 150 vs 135 you made a lot of sense. ( I ordered the 135). Tom

Try a rigger

Go to a professional rigger, not a boat yard. The Harken is an excellent choice but most are pretty good. Select and install the roller furler before buying the sail. Self installation of a roller furler can be a bit tricky.

Check out the Spin-tec units in the Store

Thomas: Check out the Spin-tec units in the store. They are suppose to be self installed and you can do it in less than an hour. It is on the top of my list for furlers.

Harken or Pro Furl

I've installed both a number of times. Harken is U.S.-based and ProFurl is made overseas, but has good support here. I like Harken simply because when you pick up the phone, you can actually talk to Peter Harken himself if you want. Jim Boerne (Burney) is a tech rep with Harken and really knows his stuff. The Harken catalog is pretty handy, too, and their free downloadable Compu-Spec software is extremely helpful. If you are handy and can read and follow directions and have a modicum of quality tools, you can install your own furler. It's not really rocket science, but you have to work carefully. If your forestay is 10 years old or if you don't know the age of your forestay, consider replacing it when you rig up your new furler. I also recommend Sta-Lok terminals for the ends of your stay.

furling

I have a new boat that came with a Pro Furl on it. The boat manufacturer claimed that Pro Furl does not make a owners manual for it. I sent a email to Profurl and they did not answer me so I guess that they don't care about their customers enough to even answer an email question. At this point I would not buy Pro Furl.
