I am finally giving up on the tuff luff and changing it over to a roller furler. The model I am looking at is the Hood Sea Furl 5. Does anyone have any thoughts about which unit is the best value? Has anyone installed the Hood System. What size did you use and how has it worked? r/ Chris Glander

Easy Choise

Furlex is the best but too expensive and generally unavailable at a discount. Second choise readily available at discount price is Profurl. Practical Sailor did a review a few years ago and listed these two on top. Not sure where the Hood system was rated. Barry

I don't know if Hood has taken care of there bearing problems, with this unit or furling but I would be hard pressed to buy one. I would look at the pro furl or Furlex. I just made a fish reef out of my old Hood unit. Put on the Furlex I have had them all this is a real piece of quality. Works very easily even on a 45'

I agree

I was duped into purchasing an "upgrade" to the original continuous line hood furling drum. To make a long story short, it doesn't work well and in my opinion would be more suited to something other than jib furling, perhaps an expensive planter.

Furling unit

Chris, I had a Hood unit on my new 430, and after only a little more that a year, I bit the bullet and spent the bucks for a Profurl. It works like a charm, and even in heavy winds, furling is no problem - not like those I had with the Hood.

Go with a Furlex

I'm in agreement with several other replies. I installed a Furlex right after purchasing my new 35.5 in 1993. It's worked without a flaw ever since. I hear good things about the Profurl too. The drum on my Furlex fits nicely below deck without any modifications.
