We recently purchased a 2006 41' Hunter DS. The sail got stuck on way out up at the hightest spreader. The longest verticle batten appears wound around the shaft, while the bottom is all the way out. Got is rolled back up. Any suggestions on who to proceed

Very Tight

You need to make sure the sail is wraped very tightly, maybe back at the dock when no wind unfurl the sail all the way out and than as you pull the sail back into the mast you hold the outhaul tension just a nuff to keep the sail wraping very tightly on the inside of the mast.
The biggest thing is to make sure the sail always gets tightly wraped into the mast and no bunching up of the sail.
Keep the main sheet tight also so the boom is pulled in the down ward position so to help with the sail going inward tightly, maybe practice at he dock with no wind.
With either the main sheet or travelar position the sail toward starboard tack and help with tension of the sail.

Here's how to use a Doyle Zenith main

Phil, I imagine you have a Doyle Zenith vertical batten furling main as provided by Hunter - at least we did on our 2005 H41 and when we first got the boat (new), we had jams too. Turns out we weren't unfurling and furling it correctly, as we discovered when the head of the local Doyle loft took us out sailing to show us how. After he showed us proper procedure, never a jam again in the 7 years we had the boat.

Here's the link to Doyle's instructions for their furling main with vertical battens. Be sure to follow them explicitly especially steps 2 and 4 on this page:
http://www.doylesails.com/sails-cruising-coastal-mains-zenith.htm

Don't let the furling winch at the mast freewheel when unfurling, and furl in with a tight furl.

Be sure to click on the links at the bottom of that page to obtain even more detailed instructions.

To fix your current jam, just try working it out inch by inch by pulling out and down on the leach, and yes you may have to go up the mast to exactly where the jam is to work it out of the mast (we never had to). After that, do a very tight furl-in and you should be set to go.

Vertical Battens

Are all the inmast Hunters with vertical Battens have this Zenith sail by Doyle or not.

I don't know about that Nick. Would have to check with Hunter for a particular model and for later years. I know in 2005, if it was a vertical batten sail, it was the Doyle Zenith that was on the bigger models like the 41 or 44.

With in mast roller furling, when stuck, the trick is to pull down the leach and pull back on the foot. It takes time but worked for me everytime when I saw boats with this problem.

Thanks for the sail advice

We have our boat at Castle Harbor Marina in Chester MD. (on the East shore from Annapolis). As soon as the temperature breaks we will give it a try. Phil

You'r correct, we have a 2005 Hunter 45 CC with mail roller furling, and 3 full length vertical battens. A year or so ago when we were looking at the new Hunter 50 CC, I noticed that it also had main roller furling, however the battens were NOT full lenght, but only were at the top 1/3 of the sail, perhaps they are changing the design.
