I have A HOOD 810 CONTINUOS LINE (LOOP) ROLLER FURLING , CAN THIS MODEL BE REEFED OR IS IT THERE A WAY TO KEEP THE LINE FROM SLIPPING IN THE DRUM? CAN THE LINE SPLITTER INSIDE THE DRUM BE REMOVED TO HELP THE HOLDING FRICTION OR WILL THIS MESS WITH THE ROLLING SMOOTHNESS.

Hood 810

I, too, have the Hood 810 Continuous Line furler. When I reef it, I cleat the furling line aft so neither the upper nor lower line can move or slip. Yet there are times when the pressure on the sail will still cause the drum to turn and unfurl the sail, usually when you least expect it. I suppose a lot depends on the condition of the teeth in the drum, and the condition of the furling line. Also, its a function of how much sail you are carrying. Hood tells me that this furler will reef up to a 120 per cent headsail, which is what I normally carry. Yet this model furler is sold as a "furler," not a "reefing system." As such, when the wind really howls, I either just roll up the entire headsail and sail with just the main, or the reverse, drop the main and sail with the unfurled headsail. My boat will sail just fine on either sail alone, but will not point nearly as high. Finally, as you probably, know, Hood sells a single line reefing system upgrade for this furler, priced at about $520. That upgrade is probably in my future....

Jeff, to cure the same problem with our...

furler I secure the drum with a line and hook tied off to a bow cleat. This prevents the drum from spinning or unwinding once you've set the reef. I would not try to tamper with the drum assembly. Bud
