I am helping a friend with a 28 foot sailboat to install a roller furling on the headsail. My question is, on my boat i have like a track system on the front stay, were the jib goes inside, is this system mandatory or there is another way to do it ?
What brand and model of furler is your friend installing on his boat?
Most furlers for boats of 28’ LOA have a rigid foil that goes over the forestay. This type of furler allows the user to reef the headsail by rolling it up partially. The foil has a groove for hoisting the headsail.
There are a few furlers available that don’t have a foil with a groove, but they are less common. These types do not permit the user to reef the headsail by rolling it up partially.
For example
The double line Hood furler on our boat has a metal sleeve tube with a slot that runs the length of the headstay. The top has a swivel for the sail head clew attachment. The bottom or base has a drum with a tack clew attachment. The sail luff has a bolt rope that slides into the slot length of the metal tube sleeve. The line through the drum allows the trimmer to role in or out the head sail (genoa/jib). The web has lots of topics on this. It would be worth searching on this topic with lots of articles.
