Our Hunter 22 is equipped with a roller furling jib. My question is this. In conditions when I want to reduce sail is rolling the jib in part way as effective as using a smaller sail? As in a storm sail. Thanx for the advice.... Gary Guisinger S/V Sally Rose

You can make your head sail any size you want w/a furling jib. You can start out with your jib unfurled all the way and if weather gets rough just furl it in to the size you feel comfortable with. All you have to do is ease the leeward sheet and haul in the furling line. Sometimes I furl it all the way in.

You'll find the roller furled jib is okay to about 75% or 25% furled. After that you can't sail up wind very well. After trying to go windward for three days on Lake Michigan in 20-30 knot winds I made a jib with a sleeve from SailRite. Total control,no more rub rail in the water. If you just day sail and can avoid going windward it doesn't matter much, just keep the iron gennie ready to go windward.

Thanx for the thought about the jib from Sailright. I had thought about that. Glad to know it works. Perhpas it is to early or not enough coffee, but I am confused about your percentage numbers on the furled jib. Could you please explain further. Is that 75% in -- 25% out ??? -- help me out here while I go get some more coffee>>>!! adios garyg
