Roller Furling Question for 1979 C30

I have a 1979 with the older roller furling system. This is the system that gets pulled up the forestay. I want to convert to the newer system, (harken, furlex). My sail maker isn't sure my mast will take the newer system. Has any one else upgraded? and if so what do you have to do if anything? It appears there may not be enough room as the sheave is real close to the forestay. Thanks Mike

i have a 91 which was upgraded by the po from a hood to harken entirely successfully.
