When I pull my jib sail out, the sail will wrap around the front stay. I can back it up some to get the wrap out and then pull out a little more sail before it starts wraping again. After I get the sail out, I have to go through the same process getting it rolled up. The boat is a 1990 Hunter 30. I've only had it for a month and this problem only started about a week ago. If anyone has any suggestions on how to correct this problem, it would be appreciated.

Marshall. I'm going to assume that when you said the jib wrapped around the forestay that you meant the jib halyard. Halyard wrap is caused by a couple of things. One is that the swivel (you didn't say which furler) is dragging so that when the sail starts its unfurling (or furling) the upper part which attaches to the halyard wants to turn too and pulls the halyard around the forestay. Make sure the swivel freely rotates and is properly lubricated. Another possibility is the halyard is become a bit loose and is more prone to wrap. Another possibility is that the angle the halyard takes from the swivel to the restrainer (you have one don't you?) is not right. Most furlers that are set up that way should be ~ 10-15* from parallel to the headstay. Overall, it could be a combination of things too.

Hope this helps.

Just an added note, there are lots of boats that don't have an additional halyard restrainer so no-big-deal there as long as the lead is proper from the swivel to the sheave in the mast. Take a look at the thread "H310 - Does My Jib Look Strange?" about this.

is something broken

I know my 40.5 has a bail below the halyard entrance into the mast to get the right angle to the swivel. When it breaks or comes loose the jib jams.
Since your problem just began I'm assuming that something changed to make the jib halyard start to wrap. Take a look at the halyard with binos to see if something has come loose, broken, etc.

Without knowing the make of your headsail furling system, I had this problem on our Selden Furlex. When I contacted Selden, they suggested the locking block might not be fully tightened, which turned out to be the problem.
