I have been toying with the idea of adding a roller furling on my 87 Hunter 23. We are on a small lake in NH and like to race in the open class on Sundays. The more I read about furlers the more I'm confused. What do you guys think about a cdi roller furling compared to a simple downhaul. I have 2 sails now, a 110 and a light air sail. We have many light air days so it is nice to be able to switch sails. Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks Wally

My understanding of a jib downhaul is that it is used for quickly dousing a jib, espesially when singlehanded. As opposed to a furler which allows you the ability to douse quickly, but also adjust the amount of sail you have out... Kind of like a reeding system for your jib/geneoa.

I Installed a CDI Furler with new 135% jib ( previously it was 150% and hanked on) on my 1984 Hunter 25.5. We are in San Francisco Bay and 25knot winds are not out of the question. The 150% jib was much too large. I found that I was sailing mostley rolled up to 100%. But I am glad that I installed a roller furling system. It is much easier to reef and roll up when wind picks up specialiiy when single handed. I recommend it. If you are considering racing - then roller furler is not the best solution as it has pockets in the luff when reefed.

Wally, I have the CDI-II roller Furler on my h23 with a 135 Gus Sails Genoa
I race mine all season. I have been out in 35 knot winds, gusting to 50 with it.
I had the main lashed to the boom and about 3' of my genoa pulled out.
With low wind I can compete in the races single handed
On a run with my Genoa on a whisker pole running wings most crusing boats in "A" fleet with spinnakers under 30' do not outrun me
If this were a race boat I would not have a Furler on it but it is not a racing boat
It is a strong, fun, easy to sail boat that wins races when you learn to sail your boat to its capabilities and strengths. Not the J-boats strengths
Alan told me that and when I started doing that I started winning alot
I single hand alot and race single handed alot
Without the furler my son would not have gotten his high wind sailing lesson that day.
I have pictures of my furler in my profile if your interested. Good luck, Charles
