I am contemplating purchasing a 1984 37ft Cutter. The boat is in great shape with the exception of the gear on the roller furling. Has anyone had any experience with rebuilding the gear and what may be involved. I have checked into complete replacement and found that to be quite expensive. Thanks, Cliff

You don't say which furler.

Various makes of furler were used on the H37C I think. My 1979 has the original Hyde Streamstay and it still works well and looks good(Link below). I have the manual and keep it lubricated. Other H37C owners can help with other furlers.

Cruising desigh

I have a 1985 H37c with a cruising design roller furler. While it is not the best n the world, I did make a round trip to Bermuda this summer in winds up to 40 knots and it worked well without any jambs or malfunctins. It was recommeded that I might want to upgrade to perhaps Schaefer 1100 which the rigger told me would work very well on the 37C and does not cost a fortune. If I do this I probably will move the crising design onto the staysail.

Cruising Design -> Profurl

My 1980 boat had a Cruising Design furler. The extrusion connections were broken and after checking on the cost of parts for an old and questionable furler, I replaced it last year with a Profurl LC32, which I like a lot.

Check out the Spin-Tec unit on the website.

CR: Check out the Spin-Tec unit on the website. Not too expensive and easy to install. They have the best warranty in the business too.

SPIN-TEC

We have a new Spin- Tec and tried it out this last weedend, as noted, it is very inexpensive and all the necessary parts are included. The instruction manual needs a little work as does their final product control but they are a beginning company and were more than helpful in their advice to us. The Spin-Tec worked absolutely perfectly and requried no great effort on our part. We did a small furl as the wind picked up in the afternoon and it, again, was very easy. I am 72 so EASY has become an important part of my vocabulary.
