IMy wife and I own a '87 H34 with a Hood Linedrive (continuous line) roller furling system. I would like to convert this system to a single line system. does anyone have any experience with this? Are there any websites I can go to for information? Any feedback is appreciated! R. Skipworth "Enchantress"

I sent sailing with Paul yesterday and I know he had converted from a Hood 810 to a regular body furler. I have the same boat and I called Hood. They will sell you a regular body for your furler which will convert what you have to it for about $375.00. I opted to not change at this time since I already purchased a new line for the continious furler. Paul's Email is paul_e_akers@fleet.com He is a good guy and I am sure would be happy to help you out.

Hood single line kit

A friend of mine - he owns a Hunter Legend 37 - just converted his 810 continous line furler to a single line. Hood has a conversion kit with a cost of about 475.00. It works great. Me, I bought a New Harken Unit 1.5, and am very pleased with it. The Reason I bought the Harken, was because it was easier to convert my Legend 37 to racing trim.

I did it.

I converted to a single line unit on my 88 35. I always hated the continuous line system, it finally seized up and I was glad to get rid of it. After considering options, the Hood conversion was just too cost effective. While I was at it I also had my headstay swivel re-built by Hood (it was starting to bind) for about $200. The new single line installation works great. Much easier to furl/unfurl (tip: furl in the jib when sailing off the wind so that the jib is blanketed by the main -- without any pressure on the jib it will more easily furl) and I don't have to worry about the line slipping when reefed. If you're going to do it yourself, make sure you get a copy of the installation manual from Hood. Mine didn't come with one and I tried to figure it out myself, greatly complicating installation matters. I also decided I needed to shorten the extrusion tube and in the process (it's a long Murphy's law type story) nicked the forestay and had to have a new stud attached. But most people have reported the conversion is a relatively easy affair, and if I had the manual it would have been much easier for me. If you decide to do it and have any questions about procedure, please feel free to email me at BRC@Ferrellscf.com.

Hood Replacement

Richard, I switched from the continuous line to a single line Hood furler last year for my 1992 Hunter 35.5.. The exchange price was about $475. It was a rather easy installation. I should mention that the tech support from Pompanette was great. I had several questions while I was in the middle of the installation. I called the service technician and he was able to talk me through the problems on the spot. Obviously, to install the new single line drum, you will need to loosen the headstay. To ensure that the mast doesn't fall backwards, slightly loosen the backstays to ease the tension, and take the halyard for the headsail, clip it to the bale on the anchor roller and tighten it up. You can then take the headstay off and not worry about the mast falling back from the pressure created by the backstays. At that point, follow the installation instructions that come with the exchange unit and you should be ok. In terms of total time, it took me several hours. I am extremely pleased with the replacement unit. It works the way a furler should. If I can be of any more help, my email is dabaker@uswest.net. Good luck. Dave Baker
