Roller Furling: Cruising Designs Reefer II

Out for a sail yesterday in brisk winds, my roller furling jammed up. It's a 15 year old Cruising Designs Reefer II, an endless loop system. What happened on this furler was that there is a wedge-shaped piece of plastic which I think serves to keep the two parts of the endless-loop line apart as they enter and exit the drum. It looks like this lost a screw or a bolt and so this plastic piece ended up jammed between the drum and one of the parts of the furling line. If so, all I need is a good tight screw. However, sometimes what seems to be so ain't, and of course being male I always jump to the conclusion that all anything needs ias the aforementioned good tight screw. I'd be curious if anyone knows this piece of machinery well enough to give me some advice (advice other than replacing it, please).

Brad: Contact CDI. I think that they have upgrades for some of these older roller systems. They should be able to help you.

CDI is the place to start. And....

I do believe CDI has a conversion for the Reefer II to a single line system. It's worth looking into. I've got the Reefer 12. It's 21 years old and they still carry a full set of parts. Greg S/V Impulsive S2 9.2C

CDI web page

Below is the link to the parts page at CDI for their older reefer systems. You should be able to identify the parts you need from the diagrams. Note: I have the 4/6 Mod A reefer, and they do NOT have all the parts any more. I ordered a set of 10 new nylon stay bearings and they sent me six with a note that said, "These are the last six nylon stay bearings in the world..." I also tried to order more torque links for that model (I lost one overboard) and they didn't have ANY left. In fact, when CDI tried to order more as spares they found that the die had been destroyed by the manufacturer. (They told me to just cut one in half and re-dlimple the extrusion.) Good luck!!
