So its getting near that time again, to pull off the tarp and start getting everything water-ready. Based on my experiences last year, my first year sailing, my biggest observation is that foredeck work really blows. Hanking on and swapping jibs in the middle of the Delaware is just not fun, especially when a tugboat or convoy of sportfisherman go roaring by. So I was thinking about adding roller furling up front this year. If anyone uses one, please let me know what pros and cons. Can I use my 150 jenny, or does it need to be altered somehow? How difficult is it to install?

i just put one on.

i went with a cdi roller furling, eay to install and works great. i had to buy a new 150 (wentwith fxsails.com, there wonderful) although you might be able to alter yours, check with a sail loft. I did have to bring the tackel above the deck but you would have to do that with any roller furling, I paid a rigger to do it because i needed a new forestay, it was only 250 for everything from him so nto bad at all! Good luck I will try to take some pictures for you!

I did a search

through the archives, and read where someone had installed a CDI furler but kept it in the anchor locker, and just made modifications to the locker doors so it would work. Looking at your rig, does that sound feasible at all? I'd be on a budget here so I'm trying to do this as cheap as possible, and honestly I'm not afraid to do some glass work if it will save me some money.

I talked it over

With the rigger and he said we would have to cut away alot of the doors and then it might be hard to open/close them, I felt more comfortable taking 2 metal pieces and extending the tackel above deck. If you have a local rigger in your area se if he will come down and give you an estimate/his opion? It wont hurt, for 250 i felt it worth having a person who had done this before, Plus we broke some parts and he replaced them for free! But thats my personal opinion, try emailing the person who did it in the anchor locker for more info!

I presume you run that furling line back to the cockpit somehow? I kind of like the way this is set up more than if it were above deck. you could probably stitch up some kind of covering for it when it sits at the dock to keep the rain out. I like your locker doors, personally I feel the more wood the better she looks. So much so when I removed the old cracked portlights I fashioned teak framed ones to back in their place.
