Roller Furler?

Hi Guys!

So I've got the mast being stepped at Zahns, and they are only charging about $1k for that. However, when I asked how much it would be to add a roller furler, they said $3.1k (Harken ESP roller furler), saying that it's around $1k to rig it.

This seems a little steep to me, as the mast is essentially being rigged anyway.

Is it easy enough to do this myself?

Only $1k to step a mast!? There must be more to this story! At those rates I'm not surprised they want another grand to install a furler.

1k seems a lot for stepping a mast on 32 foot, deck stepped mast. As far as a furler goes, look at the following link, especially if you are not a serious racer. Similar to a Famet furler which was pretty much bullet proof but no longer made. I have never seen an Alado furler in person but have seen very good reviews. Look at the video of installing, which is a DYI, without having to modify the forestay. As usual no financial interest etc..

I paid $850 to haul, step the mast and transport the boat 50 miles inland. Yep sounds a bit steep to me.

Han The Harken ESP Unit 1 system lists for about $2045 but can be street purchased between $1.5-1.6K. It will serve your coastal sailing needs. Figure another 800 to $1K to have it professionally installed. It is a perfectly serviceable system.

I chose the Harken MKIV Unit 1 system on the advice of my rigger. That will bump the prices up but if Ocean travel or being long distances from support services is in your sailing plans I feel the extra cost worth the investment. Harken states:
"Designed for performance racing and cruising sailors, MKIV furling systems are strong, lightweight and aerodynamic, with the performance and features Harken is known for: longevity, ease of use, and simplicity of installation."
It has been a significant improvement over my Profurl furler.

Hannah,
Can't be of much help with the specific costs of your project.
Six years ago when I was having my Beneteau rigged, I attached all of the stays/shrouds while the crane held the mast in position. I just checked my invoice, the yard charged me $100. for one hour of crane time. I attached all of the stays / shrouds while the crane held the mast in position. Believe it or not, the yard did not charge me anything for restepping the mast. They charged me for 60 days for yard storage time and to offload the boat from a trailer and resplash. The total came to about $2000. Again, that was six years ago. Considering the length of time that you've had to pay to keep the boat in the yard, seems that they would give you somewhat of a break on the cost of the work that you are having done or at least a break on the cost of storage. After the boat was out of the yard, I paid an independent rigger to tune the rig including rechecking under sail, that really is the manner in which the rig should be tuned.... get the mast plumb, tension using Loos gauges, and recheck under sail. Approximate cost was $250.
Just for a price check, I would talk to a few independent riggers about the cost of installing a furler and tunning the rig to get some competive prices. This project is one that doesn't necessarily have to be done in the yard. Also check out their recommendations for furlers. Since you purchased your rig from US Spars, you can check on their recommendations for a furler as well as Beneteau in South Carolina. Another suggestion is to check and possibly negotiate a sale price at the upcoming Annapolis sail boat show next month. For reference purposes, my Beneteau 343 has a Pro Furl B35S furler; no problems to date. Not sure what furlers Beneteau is using now.

I bought a Schaffer for my last boat and installed it myself. Very straight forward.... used a mechanical fitting for the new forestay

Good luck

No wonder there are so many DIYers in sailing.
I can't imagine a roller furling system would be hard to install.

Not hard but tedious and requires a bit of care to get all the sections screwed and glued. The fittings on the top need to be connected so that the correct angle is set between the halyard on the furler slide and the mast sheave or the halyard will wrap when furled.
It is the little things that can mess up your day.

If that price includes installing lamps, wiring, antenna, connections and running rigging it is about right. Zahnisers are probably getting the furler at close to John’s quote of $1,600, installing and running the furling line will take a bit more than a day (at $100/hr), so your quote seems reasonable. I assume you will be staying in the Pax for the time being and having the installer right there to tweak any adjustments and provide warranty service is worth something. Zahnisers is a good shop. Welcome to the world of B.O.A.T., it is the solution to S.N.A.F.U.

My 323 came with a ProFurl furler which was certainly adequate and trouble free for coastal sailing.
Because of storm damage (that’s another story), the entire rig had to be replaced and the furler essentially resembled a pretzel. Mike at US spars gave me the option of a Harken furler at a good price. The rigging was delivered with the forestay end fitting deliberately uninstalled. Assembly of the Harken furler was an easy DIY task, and the instructions provided were clear and concise. It functions very smoothly and after a couple of seasons, I am still very happy with it.

Doug,
Did you replace all standing rigging completely? If so, did US Spars provide all shrouds/stays precut with swaged fittings?

Big Easy; all standing rigging was replaced, all fittings swaged by US Spars except the forestay deck fitting which is a Norseman type, field installed after the roller furler was installed onto the forestay. The mast became a part of the “pretzel” configuration, broken at the spreaders... most of the standing rigging got badly kinked, internal halyards and mast wiring cut at the mast break, masthead electronics smashed. All due to an estimated 75-100mph wind shear from a thunder storm , so everything had to be replaced. The boat was in winter storage at the time, and evidently whomever did the shrink wrapping found it convenient to disconnect the intermediate stays and tape them to the mast.
