Roller Furler...should I add it to an older '27?

I have been restoring a '75 Catlalina 27 the past two years and have her in splendid shape. She did not come with roller furling, and at almost 60, I think it is time to add it or get another boat that comes with it. How expensive is it to install a CDI #6? Should I get a new sail with it or have one of my genoas (one very new) modified? Obviously, I don't want to get into a very expensive addition....sailboats in the DC/Annapolis area are abundant, and I probably could find another boat with roller furling for less than a very expensive addition to my present boat. Many thanks.

I just added one...

Rose, I just had a local shop put a Schaefer 750 (rigid) Furler on. I had to buy a new head sail anyway and it wasn't much more to go ahead and get a sail for a furler than hanked on. My boat is not worth $3500 (she is a 1973 in fair condition) but she is mine and what I can afford now so I am putting a little money in her knowing that I won't get it back just so she is nicer to sail. Just my screwed up opinion, Dan B

CDI right here on CatalinaOwners.com

Hi Rose - The attached link has some information about the CDI furler, and pricing for your model boat. If you have specific questions, try calling the chandlery and see if they can help. I installed a furler on an Islander 28 long ago... I really appreciate the added convenience. Best of luck, Trevor

CDI furler

I would use a f4 or f6 the diffrence is the head stay lenth is shorter ,on the f4. The f6 runs about 650 from CDI and they work great. National sail supply sells a f6 fuler with a delux 150% genny for 1550 or a 150 genny for about 820 I like buying things from NSS they are great to work with and I have never had a problem .If you have a good sail you could add some UV clouth and a furler tape but on my sails they wanted 600 bucks to cut the sail down to a 140% Add sunbrla UV on the leach, restich the sail where needed and replace the fular tape I just bought a new 150 for 1300 becouse my sail was looking old and blown out plus I plan to keep the boat for a wile.I dont think you will lose money.I put a new 150% genney and FB mmain and it was like pulling up the anchor for the first time . I'm doing the same thing

I'm replacing an old, broken furler on my C27. National Sails has a combo CDI FF6 with a Rolly Tasker 150% Genoa for a little under $1500.

I put on the CDI roller furling a few years ago. Never had a problem with it and do not know how I sailed for 5 years without it. I have moved the boat twice with with it. It is not hard to install once the sail has been cut and lead wire inserted. I have a 150 sail on mine and have roller it half way in in a stiff wind without a problem. Good luck.
