Pending the survey later this week, I will be the proud new owner of a 1980 Hunter 27. I do have a few basic outfitting questions: 1. Can someone recommend a good roller furler for the money? 2. Can my hanked-on 130 genny be cut to fit the roller furler, or should I plan on buying a new sail? 3. How about a cheap place for cockpit cushions? Thanks! CDI ff6 works just fine. I think I got mine fron "the sail warehouse" cheaper than CDI themselves. I had my 110 converted with #6 luff tape for $200. I made a thirty seven foot sleeve with 3 twelve foot zippers. My sail is too shot out to put anymore money in to it. Check out the archives for more info

Converting a headsail
We had the original 110 jib modified for roller furling. It appeared as if it had never been used in 18 years. A 150 roller furling gen was included with our boat. The other fellow who had a conversion done for 200 bucks got a better deal than I did. The answer in my opinion is to evaluate the remaining life in your sail, get an estimate on coverting it, an estimate on a new sail, and make an informed decision. Don't neglect advice from experienced sailors around you. Andy

I put a CDI on my last boat, a Tanzer 7.5 and found it to be a great unit, however, the furling line was very thin, which made it difficult to furl when the boat was on the wind. Maintenance wise, you'll never have to do anything to it. It is just so simple and well thought out.

but I think CDI has the price advantage today. I confirm the advice on the sail. Involve a local sailmaker, and get his advice on all your sails, not just the furling conversion. David Lady Lillie

I have heard of installing ratchet blocks on furling lines and it makes sense to me. I have not installed one yet, but I plan to.

Great cockpit seats
Something like the "seat-go-anywhere" from West Marine fits on our 1980 H27 cockpit seats perfectly. Plus, you can take them to the bow, or use the folding/racheting mechanism to have a seat/backrest. We keep 4 on the boat and they are constantly used. Plus, much cheaper than custom cushions!!!
