Well, I took the whole thing apart again, top to bottom, and here's what I found. The original problem of the cup falling was pretty well fixed by tightening the forestay turnbuckle. The line still rubs the top of the cup at points and the exit angle is 45 degrees, or close, but I'm still going to move the first fairlead up an inch or two. A trip to my sailmaker was helpful. He sells CDI, Schaefer, and Harken systems. His opinion is that the cup serves very little purpose other than to contain the line and could be removed. I hope it doesn't come to that. He also tells me that with the problems I've had, and by examining the hack job on the sail conversion, there was no way this was installed professionally.I do have the problem that Richard suggested in my last post. The halyard has worked its way out of place and is fouled in the cap. I wasn't able to straighten the luff extrusion, but as my sail maker suggested, putting the sail itself back on helped. It's all back together and I'll nurse it through the season. My conclusion about the CDI remains the same. I've now come into contact with many people who have only had one or two problems with theirs...I'm just lucky enough to have had them all!!! Thanks to everybody who gave me their suggestions. It now works better than it ever has. Have a great season!
