I just installed a Schaefer Snapfurl 500 on my C-22. The halyard wraps around the headstay/foil when I try to furl the sail. What do I do to prevent this?

Had it, Fixed it

I know your pain. I had the same thing with the snap furl. Two remedies (I did both): 1. Buy a halyard restrainer (West Marine P# 285538) and mount it about 6 inches below the mast top on the bow side. Run the jib halyard thru it. This will bring your halyard more parallel to the swivel. 2. Make a stainless pendent about 6 inches long and place it between the furler and the tack of your jib. This will raise the jib higher to bring the swivel more parallel to your newly purchases halyard restrainer. This works. The theory is the angle of the halyard to forestay is increased which greatly increases the force required for it to wrap. It works. Also, check your forstay and halyard to be certain you didn't damage them. It only takes a couple of wraps.

Wire pennant at head of jib

Place the wire pennant between the head of the jib and the swivel, not on the tack. This has the same effect as putting it on the tack but is a superior position. This is a normal procedure for correcting halyard wrap on furlers. The reason is that furling head sails generally have smaller luffs than comparably sized hank on head sails. So to get the swivel up close to where the halyard comes down from the mast to lessen the possibility of halyard wrap, a wire pennant is added to the head of the sail.
