Catalina 22 Port Colborne
We lost our roller furler in a wind storm last year and now need to replace it.
This is only our second year with the C22.
Prior to that we had a Matilda which used a CDI r/f.
We have heard mixed things about the CDI's with the Catalina.
Any suggestions on what kind of r/f would be best.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Have an 83 Cat22 with a cdi I installed 2 years ago. So far it has functioned flawlessly with zero maintenance beside regular inspection (like everything else). Easy to step and unstep the mast as well since it is tough and simple.

Fair winds

There are better furlers - but - they cost a bunch more money...

Our Catalina 22s are not expensive boats - I consider my CDI appropriate for this size and cost of boat. The CDI works better than its naysayers will admit as a roller reefer for the headsail. CDI furlers seem to be reliable and
the plastic foil makes mast setup easy - the plastic does not take a permanent bend when stowed against the mast. I just strap mine along the mast with small ball ended bungee loops available at any hardware store.

CDI works for me.

The only problem I ever had with the CDI Furler on our previous C 25 was the furling line snapping. But that was because the line was 20 years old & not the fault of CDI.
I was still able to easily wind up the furler manually at the foredeck. Like OldCat said, U can certainly pay more, but are U really getting more? There are lot of sailors out there who don't even think its necessary to have a furler on a boat as small as a the C 22.
Its a fairly small jib to hank on, & seems like a lot of hank on sails last twice as long as their furled counterparts. Likely because they're stowed below 90% of the time, instead of being blown to ribbons in storms.
