I am thinking about installing roller furling on my Catalina 22, but am lost about what will and will not work. I think someone on this forum suggested a Snapfurler by Schafer. I checked on this unit; the price is right, but the specifications are for a 31.1" system, and a #5 luff tape. The C 22 has a 25.83 inch headstay, and most of the sail that I looked at have a #6 luff tape. I am not sure if these will work on my boat. I have never installed a furling system. I would appreciate advice on what is the best combination of sails and furler. It looks like the best prices are on Sail Net...Air Force Sails, and Snapfurler. David

Go to CDI

David: I would strongly recommend the CDI furling system for your 22. I have had mine for 13 years without any trouble - zero. Never jammed, easy to maintain (you do nothing), easy to raise and lower the mast with headsail either furled or removed, and easy to replace the furling line. I have a number of friends who have also retrofitted CDI on their 22s with similar results. CDI also knows the 22 and can and will give you all the help you need to order and install. They area great supplier. Can I give a more glowing recommendation? I wish all the decisions were this easy. You may also want to check out Practical Sailor for recommendations - they also loved the CDI furler for small boats.

Furler

Bob, Thank you for your input. I am researching a CDI. Can you partially furl and still sail. I am in West Texas, and we have an abundance of wind. Also, do I need to cut my headstay or order a new one? And, what sail would your suggest? I am new to this type of boat...have been sailing a H-16 for years. David

Bob, What model of furler do you have. FF2? This looks like the right one to me. Thanks, David
