Roller Furl

Hi,
I plan on buying a new genoa and installing roller furling next
spring. I was wondering what furling manufacturers and models the
Vega
fleet is using and how satisfied the users are.

The second question is what should the specifications be for a roller
furling genoa. The specs for the origonal was:

Luff: 30'4.25"
Leach: 28'6.5"
Foot: 15' 3"
Wgt 230 g/m sq / approx 8 oz

Any suggestions on sail loft would also be appreciated.
Thanks,

Jim

Hi

In the UK most Vegas use the Rotostay model but I do not know if it is available in the USA. The price is about £600. A good bi-radial furling genoa costs about £500 but I don not have the actual sizes to hand. If you want I will find out for you.

Jim, installed a Hood RF on my Vega myself and had Hood make a 135 Genoa. Working great for 5 yrs. About 1600$. Jim

Last spring I installed a" Furlex 100 S" with a new Genoa. Not hard, and it's
an oustanding system. Looks great and works better. I bought it from
Performance Yachts via their web site. They're easy to deal with (bought two
Harken winches from them as well), and they had the best price by far.

Hi Hans

I agree that the Furlex 100S is a great furling gear and it would be the one I would fit by choice, if I could afford it!

Dear Hans,

Its probably a superfluous remark. I installed a Furlex 100 S on my Vega,
but I did not purchase a new sail.
My genoa sail was converted for the Furlex. That's a lot cheaper.

Your comment to Hans is not superfluous at all.

As I have said: I have installed "FURLEX" Roller Furling on two Vegas over
the past several years, with wonderful results in both cases. I have had no
experience with other furling systems but, given the results I have had with
my Furlex systems, I can certainly highly recommend them.
One word of caution: If you know you are going to instal a gib-furling
system (again, referring to my own experience with FURLEX), be sure to
measure CAREFULLY AND EXACTLY the length of your forestay when you unstep
your mast, before making any adjustments to any turnbuckles on your forestay.
This is very important in determining the length of the forestay since you
must use this measurement in installing the new furling system. So, if you
must loosen a STAY in order to unstep the mast, be sure to do it with the
BACKSTAY rather than the FORESTAY! !
Good Luck..................................Ed

Hi Henk,

Thats true, it would have been cheaper, but I needed a new sail anyway, and
had a 135 made.
