Really chalky. I'd buff it and it would chalk out in a month. The Starboard side had a repair at some point and was painted for finished with white so it really stood out. I'm guessing someone rubbed a dock or piling with it and chewed up the gel coat. Sorta screwed up a touch up I was doing on the port side bow and need to sand and redo it tomorrow. Roll and tip doesn't do as well when its 90 out :)

Looks great. Just wondering what paint you used on the boot stripe. I will be roll/tipping mine in the up coming weeks.

Off white was Pettit ezpoxy. Stripe was Interlux Brightside Polyurethane in Dark Blue. I didn't use the boot strip version because of the color (not sure what the difference is anyway). It took 3 coats to get full coverage (primer was white since that's all West Marine had). Need to thin with 333 brushing liquid. It really goes on pretty good and by the 3rd coat it looks deep. The blue will show imperfections. I could see the fiber pattern in the glass. I used a gray scotch bright pad by hand to scuff the paint between coats. Don't try to paint without scuffing the previous coat because the paint doesn't act the same.

We did quite a bit of trial an error, I can see some brush strokes in mine but its not bad and from about 5 feet it looks like a spray job. The temperature fluctuations is what killed us. I was in the shade when I sanded the boat. when I came back to start painting they had moved my boat to the other side of the yard which was in the sun all the time. First coat looked like spray up close but it was about 72 degrees and 50% humidity. Paint flowed really well. 2nd and 3rd coats it was like 85-90 degrees and 75-80% humidity. Temp was the same for all coats of the boot stripe, it actually rained about 2.5 hours after we striped.

What seemed to give us the best results was rolling up and down and tipping wet edge to dry edge. For my first try I'm totally happy with the result.

She looks good! So good in fact, I've got some questions for ya!

What was your prep process?
Did the repair patch give you any issues, or you just primed right over it?
Brushes or rollers?

Looks awesome! I will end up doing mine some day in the near future. I think I am going to have to go red though. The red ones always catch my eye.

Regarding those fenders... Does the side of the boat fare better if fender covers are used?

Thanks,

Andrew

My fenders got all sticky in the sun and were leaving residue on the finish. I put old T-shirts over them and problem solved.

Thanks. That is what was happening to me. The fenders were leaving black marks on the hull. Now I will try the T-shirts.

Thanks!
