20 years ago a guy started a project in the Bronx. He gathered under privileged kids in one of the poorest areas of the country and started building boats. The project has grown, it is pretty cool. Here's a video:

Currently there is a fund raising effort coordinated by the good folks at OffCenterHarbor.com. Two donors have offered to match donations up to $10,000 each, essentially tripling any contribution made during the campaign. More information is available on the donation page here: https://www.classy.org/fundraiser/1537916

If you appreciate good video and classy wooden boats take a look at OffCenterHarbor.com well worth the money.

mission
Rocking the Boat empowers young people from the South Bronx to develop the self-confidence to set ambitious goals and gain the skills necessary to achieve them. Students work together to build wooden boats, learn to row and sail, and restore local urban waterways, revitalizing their community while creating better lives for themselves. Kids don't just build boats, boats build kids.

Rocking the Boat is committed to helping its participants:

  • Stay in high school until they graduate or receive an equivalency diploma
  • Enroll in college or trade school and be prepared academically and emotionally to succeed there
  • Develop technical skills such as sailing, boat handling, navigating, chart reading, carpentry, sample collection and testing, scientific observation, and recording data, all of which reinforce STEM concepts and put them into a practical context
  • Develop soft skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking

Absolutely! Investing in our kids, especially the at-risk ones is how we make a better future. They discover their capabilities. They learn to pay it back. In this case they learn to value their own backyard. All good.
