Hey All

Anyone here sail to Roanoke Island NC?

I'm trying to chart a trip from Elizabeth City to Oriental and would like to make Roanoke my first stop. However, from the NOAA charts it looks like the water depth is good if you pass the island to the west but all of the marinas/resaurants are on the east side of the island. My boat is kind of small ( equals slow) so I don't want to go to a marina on the east side only to have to sail north in the morning to get to the west side of the island before I head south. And I don't want to motor the channel on the east side either (if I can avoid that).

It looks like there is a nice Anchorage/sheltered lagoon on the northwest point of the island (see attached pic) but Active Captain does not say if it is private or not. And I can't find any reviews that give info on if there are any restaurants within walking distance etc.

Anyone make this trip? And do you have recommendations? I've visited Roanoke by land many times so I know of some of the nice spots in Manteo... what I really need is advice on where I can park my boat for the night and still be able to get to some fun places and re provision.... and if possible still be able to sail south the next day without first going north.

If I have to I can motor past Roanoke on the east side but I'd rather not... it is a sailboat after all:neutral:

I know that lagoon is a private marina for the home owners. Do not think transients welcome. NOAA Chart #12204 shows the east bridge as fixed at 90', and the two west bridges at 80' and 187'. I did see a boat anchored in Manteo harbor on a trip thru in April.

Thanks. That's good to know

That won't be a problem. My mast is 24' and sits about 30' above the water. I can also drop my mast in about 2 min. if I have to.

As I think through this, it looks like I'll sail to Manteo Harbor and then motor the channel south the next day (Bummer).

Shallowbag Bay has over 7' of water in the channel. The town of Manteo has a free dock for 24 hours and room to anchor as well. We could not get under the bridge on the west side so we ran the full channel. It was not bad. Boring but not bad. Manteo is a very nice little town

Thanks....

Got hit by the Deracho and had to put my plans on hold while I cut trees up. But maybe August I'll get there.

I live in Elizabeth City and have sailed into and around Roanoke Island several times. The bridges on the western side have a minimum clearance of 45 feet that limits my boat but there is a small boat basin on the mainland shore that could be used for you to overnight. Manns harbor marina is located there which is basically a place to eat and a boat ramp. The bigger concern might be the run from there to Ocracoke. I would consider ducking into Englhardt and make it a 3 day trip from EC.
