River water

We are in a very nice marina that is located on a working river. There are at least 4 shipyards, not to mention container ship terminals etc. This year seems to be the worst as far as the the smell from the filters in the boat when we change them. We also get it after the flushing is complete in the head. A friend on the dock told us that he puts a chlorine tablet in the filter and as it dissolves it mixes with the raw water running through it to the head and it has eliminated the order. He says that he still treats the holding tank with K.O. and uses C.P. but putting the chlorine tablet in the filter for the head seems to take the smell away. My question is, would this cause problems with the hoses, electric head, or macerator (which in our case is connected to the head?)

No Chlorine

As we have learned from Peggy in the past and as recent as today do not use chlorine in a marine sanitation system as it will break down rubber parts in the toilet and help deteriorate hoses which speeds up the odor permiation process.
