I'm a novice as you might guess by the title. My 19' O'day daysailor went over, mast and sails became lodged in a sunken tree (though I didn't know it). So, by the time we got it back up, the mast had ripped out from the metal plate it sits on. (Please excuse the wrong terminology here) The mast just ripped up and out from the bolt on each side of the "shoe" that essentially is the base of the mast when its on. That "shoe" also sits on a thin metal plate that got all twisted up so it doesn't fit on the bottom part of it that is still on the deck. So, I want to know if I can saw off the bottom inch or two off the mast;then redrill two holes in it to fit on a new "shoe" which I can attach to a new "plate". Hopefully it then will sit over the bottom part of the plate that is still on the deck of the boat. I'm sure those are not the correct terms but hopefully you know what I mean. Is this all repairable? Will it matter to the rigging if I cut an inch or so off the mast? Assuming I can do all this anyway.

Yes it is repairable. Cutting some off the base of the mast will work, but you may have to get new "wire rigging" or have your current wire cut shorter. You'll have to re-work the bottom ends of the wire with nico-press fittings or have them re-swagged at a rigging shop. Your jib luff may have to be shortened as well. The main should be OK. Good luck!

Ripped the mast off its' tabernacle

the name of the parts you are talking about is tabernacle. a friend of mine had a similar thing happen when a shroud snapped in a storm. there is a place in mass. where you can order one. that might be easier and cheaper than redoing all the rigging. can't remember the name right now but can research it if you want. good luck

shorter mast

The mast on my daysailer was shortened by 6 inches by the previous owner due to similar damage. The shrouds and forestay were all replaced with shorter ones and it works fine.
