we got a tear on the starboard side dodger window down by the small zipper. Is it possible to replace the window panels (they are sewed in) or does the dodge itself need to be replaced?

this is the OEM dodger on a Catalina 310.

thanks,
matt

Matt: The eisenglass window can be replaced. 2 ways to do this; 1. Take it to a marine canvas shop and have them replace it. 2. If you have a heavy duty sewing machine such as the one that SailRite sells, or a Juki you can do it yourself. if you want more information on option 2, send me a note and I'll discuss this option in more detail. I have a machine, and I just sew the new glass in, with a double row of zigzag sitches, from the inside. Then from the outside very carefuly cut out the old glass. By doing this your fabric "Frame" holds its shape and the new glass fits better. It will last long enough until the fabric has to be replaced next..

you don't even necessarilly need a heavy duty sewing machine

I replaced by windows using an old kenmore ... worked fine ... sailrite.com (I've no affiliation) has materials and instruction videos .... key is to leave old glass in place as Long Story suggests

Had a small (approx 18" x 30") window in my "Florida Bimini" replaced at local canvas shop (lower Chesapeake bay) for $79.

Do it yourself

If this is the side window, I would use a razor to slit the threads, pull out the old plastic, remove the old threads. Use the old plastic as a template to cut the new plastic and slide it in and using some masking or blue painters tape to hold in place and sew it. No big deal.

My boat is a 2001 and I replaced the original dodger, Bimini, and connector last year. It was made by JSI I believe. The old one is faded some and the clear isn't perfect but if any one wants it I would be happy to give it to you. It was still in usable condition when removed. I had the new one made and added a full enclosure.

Did you happen to lower the dodger a little when you made the new one? I wish mine was about 4" lower to see over better, and it would have no effect going in and out of the cabin or sitting under it. The stock unit is a view breaker.

Anyone done a hard dodger with a soft bottom? http://www.tartarooga.com/

I agree. Our PO was very short, but I love being able to see over the dodger. Hate to look through plastic all day, might as well stay inside! :)

Stu, Thanks for the links. I really like what Rick did. Gave me some ideas. I worry my talent is not quite up to that, but definitely something to think about. Did he ever add soft sides?

I can really attest to the sweetness of adding handrails to your dodger as they really help a lot. Have no idea why Catalina does not see these as a standard item as they really do enhance safety when you are going forward or even coming on and off the boat. I picked up some here on SBO, drilled the holes and mounted mine, Pretty simple.

I did not lower the dodger but the Bimini is slightly higher. Most of the time when sailing we have the connector out and we are inland lake sailors so weather conditions are good. Plus I am 6'5. It pains me to lower anything.

attention all: we were out on the boat yesterday and discovered any easy fix to the "too tall dodger". If you are 5'11", you can stand on a cushion and it is high enough to see over the dodger but low enough to stand easily under the bimini :D
