Hello all, I am considering a garhauer rigid vang for my 260. I had a boomkicker on my 240 and liked it. It was a snap to put on/take off when trailering. What about the Garhauer? Any comments would be appreciated.

I have one

The gerhaur is a very good piece of equipment. Adding it allowed me to remove my topping lift, but the downside is that when trailering I really need a second person to hold the boom while the vang is removed. It also creates somewhat of a problem when the boom itself is removed because the weight of the vang twists the boom and makes the pin hard to remove. All that being said, the solid vang makes the boat perform much better. I have a lot more control over sail shape and it almost makes up for the lack of a traveler.

Use the Main Halyard...

as a topping lift when installing/removing the boom. I have always done this singlehanded and it works well. Also, before removing, crank down on the vang and tie a line through the two blocks to keep them close together. Then release the vang control. This keeps the spring under control so you can handle the thing while removing it. Fair winds, Tom

BoomKicker

I have a BoomKicker on my H26 and I’m very happy with it. As for removing the boom – you can take the pin out of the boom with the BoomKicker on (easier to get the pin out), then just lift the boom off the BoomKicker.
