Has anyone added a rigid boom vang to a 340? Or maybe someone knows what brand Hunter uses? I'm wondering how much drilling and fitting is needed. The Garhauer one looks pretty good but I'm wondering if any are just bolt in replacements for the plain old rope vang. Thanks for any help, Miles

Just a bolt in.

Miles: Just installed a Garhauer Rigid Vang. There were 8 holes for the mast and 6 holes for the boom. The custom manufacture the mast and boom fittings for each boat. Pretty amazing considering a $230-270 price tag. It came complete with line and block for the mast base. The will modify the basic package for your boat if you need something special too. You will need a drill, 1/4 x 20 tap and the proper size drill for the tap. Also need some anti-sieze compound for the bolts and a wrench. They do not supply the bolts or washers either. One of the obvious advantages to the rigid vang is that it eliminates the need for the topping lift. I left mine on the rig because I have a Dutchman system.

Rigid Vang 340

Thanks Steve! That's just what I was hoping for. Sounds pretty easy and the price is right especially compared to some of the other rigid vangs on the market ($$$) Miles

Just instlalled a Seldon "Rodkicker"

On 1989 Hunter 33.5. I think Seldon is making spars for the current Hunters. It has a gas shock feature that is supposed to be quieter (no squeaking) than than the spring technology. I suspect, however, that the shock will fall suddenly rather than the gradual weakening of the spring. For some reason the mast fitting on our Z-Spar mast worked well for the Seldon, but I attached a special fitting to the boom. The fitting that I received required eight #10-24 screws that had to be drilled and tapped. I have had the vang for 2 weeks and I don't know how I ever lived without it. (Biggest change may be the fact that I ran the control line for the vang to the coach roof winch.) It makes it easy to trim the boom height and control the shape of the main from the cockpit. The price was about double what Steve reported for the Garhauer but I think the unit is a little lighter so I can carry more wine and beer. You will probably be able to use your rope vang to compress the new "solid" version, but you may need more line to lead it to the coach roof. Good Luck! Ron "Counterpoint"

Miles: If you get one let me know. I screwed up the installation and had to re-do some of the boom mounting screws. I had to redrill four holes in the boom and move the vang aft. Their instructions left a little to be desired. Nice addition, and well made.

Oh Ron!

Ron: I wish I would have thought about the wine and beer load before I purchased my vang. That is a very good point. Oh well live and learn, isn't that what HOW is about<grin>!

STEVE:

Does the spring really squeak, or is that just hot air from those with gas??? One so Seldon gets the truth anymore. Ron

Factory-supplied unit.

I just bought a new 2001 H340 and the factory-supplied rigid vang unit is a Selden.

Ron B the squeak is...

my wife when she found out I bought it. Other than that no noise except the wind.

I eliminated the wife squeak...

...by getting bumped from a United flight, for which they paid me $400. I just sent the money to Garhauer! Am sitting at home waiting for the delivery.

The Garhauer is great!!!

I put a Garhauer RV-20 rigid vang on my 310 and it made a world of difference. The 4:1 soft vang that came stock was junk and under powered. I had to winch the vang cuz I could not pull on it by hand. With a 20:1 on the Garhauer, even my wife can pull on it. The boat points higher and I am able to flatten and depower the main, thus reducing the heal of the boat and higher boat speeds. Steve, s/v The Odyssey, H310 P.S. My vang does not squeak!!!
