I'm curious how many guys used screws to install their vang and how many used rivets and the pros and cons of each method. I've just purchased one and am ready to install it. Thanks

Screws?

There are very heavy loads placed on a vang. I used thru bolts and a SS backing plate. (It helps to have a mast base access panel, of course.)

Michael: I do not know what type of Vang you are using? When you get a Garhauer Rigid Vang they are basically setup of 1/4" bolts. I tapped the mast and the boom. I used nylon washers between the boom/mast and the mounting plates. When I set the bolts I used Tef-Gel anti-siezing compound.

Tapped and bolted Too

On a H40.5, I installed a Garhauer Rigid Vang and used 1/4" bolts. Ditto on Steve's install, only I used the existing mast fitting where the soft vang attached. I had to drill it out slightly to make the new bolt fit. I have put Yaga through some very tough conditions over the last 3 years and put the vang to the test. I just inspected it this weekend and everything looks and fits tight. Machine screws let me remove them to do a close inspection. The boom fitting has screws on both side so they would have to rip out sideways. I did not see any signs of movement of the fitting.

It is a Garhauer rigid vang

and another sailer passed by as I was about to install it. He said I should use rivets. I was all set to drill and tap for 1/4 bolts. He said rivets were stronger, I've never heard that so I thought I would check. The nylon washers sound like a good idea. By the way this is on a 260 sailing Lake Michigan primarily. Thanks again.
