I'm considering putting a rigid boom vang on my 28'MkII. Any advantages/ disadvantages anyone would care to share? Also, any suggestions for make/ model? I've looked at Garhauer's web page. Thanks in advance.
I think rigid vangs are a great upgrade, no topping lift, positive support for the boom while reefing, etc. The Garhauer is the best value going and got high marks from Practical Sailor. It's not that more expensive than many traditional vang kits.
I went from a c28mkII to the c320 with a ridged vang and it's great. It helps when reefing so you can fiddle with the dutchman adjustment without worrying about keeping the topping lift tight enough to keep the boom off your head. No dis-advantage I know of and I agree Garhauer is the best buy around for that and a lot of other things.Stan
Great upgrade and worth the $$. The only downside I have found is that routing the mainsheet back to the cockpit is more complex. It rubs along the outside of the vang where it used to run freely before. This is not a major downside compared to the many upsides so go for it.Richardcatalina 30
