Rigging Tension for Cal 2 27

This winter I intend to drop the mast on my 76 Cal 2 27. Need to replace the VHF antenna and coax. I will probably replace any iffy wiring for sreaminmg and anchor lights. Anyway does anyone have the rigging tension specifications for this boat. I need Outer Shrounds #s Inner Shrounds #s Forestay Back stay (mine is adjustable) so a ball park figure would be great I have a Loos gauge PT2 Thanks SteveM

Just measure the turnbuckles before you start

and tag each one with the pin-to-pin length. Edited to add: if you are still concerned with the rig tension, measure that too and mark it on the tag for the turnbuckle.

Rig Tension

Thanks Actually, I have done just that, boat is on the water. The reason I asked was that the shroud tensions differ on one side, making the rig I believe uneven. I take down the rig with those settings notes and it goes back uneven!!! The outers are set at 20lbs Inners at 18lbs currently Is that the optimal?? What was the suggested rig tension for the shrouds. As the backstay is adjustable I can play with the rake of the mast, but laterally the mast needs to be straight up and down !

I found that the two DVDs By Master rigger Brion Toss helped me. "Tuning Your Rig" and "Inspecting Your Rig". He tells how to tune any size boat and gives you alot of info on the rigging.

Steve, Can't answer your question - sorry. I just bought a '76 2-27 on a trailer, haven't had the mast raised yet, and have a lot of unanswered questions about the rigging. I have an original Owner's Manual, but no rigging tension specs. If I can provide any other info from the manual, let me know. This guy: Seal's Spars & Rigging, Alameda, California, Steve Seal (510) 521-7730, has a rep as a rigging expert for Cals (having worked for them). Might try him. He owns (owned) a 2-27 and has written about the standing rigging. If you're up for a few questions from me, my email is given above - I'll certainly appreciate it! ...Bob C.

more info on tuning

As I read some of the talk on how to tighten the rigging, the shrouds, and back stay, I get the idea, and I might be wrong, that everyone is tring to set the shrouds to a setting that has to do with the size of the boat or to the original settings in the owners manual. First any cable under tention is set like a guitar sting.it is brought up to tention till it makes a low musical tone.If you pluck the shroud and you hear a dead tud sound yo do not have it tighened enough. Of course both sides are dune up the same way, equally..Then you can use a gauge to set it to the best setting but bringing it up to this tune when pucked gets you close. The longer the cable or shroud the higher the pitch. upper shrouds would have a higher tone then the lowers being longer.This goes for all size cables and all size boats.

Let's go surfing now ... US Spars Selden Mast Charleston Spars Hall Spars All of these sites have good tuning information. The Selden site even tells you how to set tension with nothing more than a couple of rulers. :) The goal is to have the uppers go just slack when heeled 20 deg and the mast be straight when sailing heeled at 20 deg. Don't worry about the lowers going slack when the boat is heeled as long as the mast is straight. Once you get to the goal. Note the settings that work for your boat, so you can return to them. If your uppers are at 20 lbs and the lowers are at 18 lbs, they are floppy loose or you are not using the gauge correctly. The uppers will be tighter than the lowers on almost every boat ... I don't know of one that carries more tension on the lowers than the uppers, but as soon as I say "on all boats" someone will find the exception. :)

Tension

Steve; I have the specs but they are on my boat. I am going out of town this weekend so it will be a week or so until I can get to them. I seems to me that it does not give the specs in pounds but in inches of play. My boat sails best when tuned a bit on the tight side. The mast on a 2-27 is like a tree, no chance that you will bend it back, only side to side. I tune it front a rear with just a touch of weather helm and then make the uppers and lowers with the stated amount of play. Sorry I don't have the specs here. Look for them in a week or so. John

Steve Let me add one more reference to the advice already posted: the book "Illustrated Sail & Rig Tuning". It is very comprehensive but remarkably easy to follow. The illustrations and printing are beautiful. The book is published in Norway, so "real" English (British) is used - "turnbuckle" becomes "rigging screw" - but such things are minimal. After all, much sailing technology originated in Britain and the Colonies, anyway. I found my copy at West Marine, but here's a link to the publisher: Fred T
