Hi, I have a 1988 Catalina 27 standard rig and am considering an APC. I looked on the Doyle site but didn't find an answer to a couple of questions, so am posting here with the hope that you can help. What kind of attachment point is required at the bow? Can the spare jib halyard (the other one is attached to the furlex roller furler) be used to hoist the APC? Is a spinnaker crane required at the mast head? What size APC is recommended for this boat? Many thanks for any inisight you can provide. Bob Musson

APC Requirements

Bob, The ideal setup is to have a real spinnaker halyard which has a sheave or block on a mast crane above the headstay. It is possible to use a spare genoa halyard but you will not be able to jibe without causing chafe as the halyard crosses over the forestay. As far as the tack line is concerned it is ideal but not required to attach it forward of the headstay for the same reason. In reality many people use spare genoa halyards and bow cleats etc below or behind the headstay because they have no other choice. Even though it is relatively easy to jibe the APC many people never do. They set and douse the sail on the same reach and have a great time doing it. The .75oz. APC for your boat would be 500 sqft. You can get a price on this sail in the sailboatowner.com chandlery. Thanks, Bill C. Doyle Sails

thank you Bill

Hi Bill, Thanks for the information. Since my mast is off the boat for new rigging for the winter, sounds like a good time to put on the spinnaker crane and block. Bob
