I am trying to obtain a quote from several rigging companies for the mast rigging. I can't believe that they are asking me for a rigging plan and or to bring the boat to them for an estimate! My boat is a Fountaine-Pajot Athena 38 catamaran. Has anyone here had the same work done or know someone who has who could share some of the details with me so the the rigging companies can do their job!

In my experience you either (a) bring them the boat or they visit the boat to estimate it (b) drop the mast, mail them the shrouds, they reproduce them and mail them back (c) you figure out what you need up top, have them swage the top connections and leave the shrouds long so you can cut them to fit and fit mechanical terminals or (d) you get mechanical uppers too and do the whole thing yourself.

After getting a high quote via route (a) last year I chose route (c) and just replaced my backstay rather than the whole rig.

I don't think I would trust anyone who did (a) without seeing the boat or requiring that you take any risks associated with wrong dimensions if they are making both upper and lower connections.

Re: Actually...

I can understand that you want to get multiple quotes, but you will just have to specify roughly what you need (provide a rigging plan) to get quotes. They can easily provide labor quotes. Try a site lite www.riggingonly.com to get ball parks on the materials. Worst case you can easily estimate the shroud lengths using the standard measurements for you boat (i,p,j,e). The toughest thing might be to figure out what terminals are up top. The manual, binoculars and a call the aforementioned website could all help. Good luck.

I would definitely have them visit the boat and measure. Has the mast ever been altered? Are all the rigging components stock?

While having a rigger come to the boat is the best option, it is probably the most expensive.

If you can remove the rigging and have the mast down, replacing the rigging is pretty simple, and removing it and sending it off to someone like Rigging Only, you can get it replaced relatively inexpensively.
