Rigging my Reef Lines

Our 1985 Catalina 30 Mk I has two reef cars on the Starboard side of the boom. At the forward end of the boom there are two cleats. (No lines for the clue) On the luff, there is a line going from a cleat on one side of the mast thru the eye for the lower tack reef (two reef points) and down the other side of the mast to a second cleat. No horn. The outhaul comes down the side of the boom and is currently wrapped in a figure 8 around the two forward boom cleats. The boom looks like the old style kind that rotates, although I can't see how since it has mid-boom sheeting...

This post is as close as I found to my setup, but it is not quite the same. (His is a Mk II) I don't have the reef lines led aft as in the picture in the post. If the two boom cleats are for the 2 reef lines, where does the outhaul terminate?

Can someone tell me or point me to a source that would tell me how this is to be rigged?

i don't really understand your post, though the reefing diagram you refer to is how my boat (late '91) is rigged but my outhaul is INSIDE my boom. i guess catalina has changed rigging over the years, and god knows what p.o.'s have done. i suggest again, get an owner's manual and use it as a starting point.

I need to buy some line so I can rig my mainsail for reefing. How do I rig the aft end (Clew) for two reef lines? (There are two cars there for that.) How is the forward end (Tack) rigged? None of the lines are led aft to the cockpit. The outhaul comes down the side of the boom, not internally, and goes to the cleats I assume are supposed to be for the clew reef lines. If that is so, how is it SUPPOSED to be rigged?

As for the comment on 'RTFM', as stated there are potentially PO's additions/removals, etc. to consider not to mention the differences in models and years. Finding the correct manual online is not necessarily easy, and I only have a few days to get the line while the sale is on.

what do you mean while the sale is on? how does the seller have his reefing rigged now?

get a surveyor, now, or are you the seller?

again, the diagram you sent is exactly how my boat is rigged and i have no idea what use the hardware on your boom has been set for. if nothing else rig your boat the proper way like your diagram shows and find out what do with the other lines afterward. at least you wil have one thing done according to how it was intended as a starting point.

I think he meant the WM annual memorial day sale with 40% off all line. It started today.

If your boom has two cleats on the sb, one is for the aft reef line the other for the topping lift. The bottom cleat forward will be for the outhaul where it exits. If there is a port side cleat, it's for the lazy jacks.
There should be two cleats, ( or one cleat, one pad eye) on the mast below the boom to reef the luff of the main.
(See international catalina30 association. technical library; c30 parts manual, section 2, for a diagram)

BTW, as mentioned above for jiffy reef diagrams, The existing leech reef line, if lengthened, can be brought to a cheek block on the forward boom and through the reef cringle back down to a block at the base of the mast. Then back to the cockpit.

if you study the diagram supplied, it's clear that both positions on the port side of the boom are for reefing, and only for reefing.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I think I have a good idea how things need to be.
