I just installed CDI FF4 Roller Furler on my O'Day 25 and was wondering how people run the furling line back. I am using stanchion mounted fairleads but was looking for suggestions on position of the cleat and type of cleat. I want to make sure that it is out of the way. Has anyone used anything else than a standard cleat? Perhaps a clam cleat, cam cleat or even a clutch.
thanks,
sPk
I installed a CDI FF-2 Roller Furler on my O'Day 222 and made the mistake of mounting the control line cleat on my combing before the Gennie winch, not in line with it but more inboard. This was a big mistake because when I tack, the flapping sail causes the sheet to get hooked around this cleat. I will be relocating the cleat to a new position next to my stern rail this fall. I would have liked to have mounted it further back near the stern rail, but the line wasn't long enough to reach. I will be adding on to the line when I move the cleat.
As far as what to use to snub off the furler control line goes, personally I would use a regular horn cleat, or in my case I'm using a Herreshoff Cleat because I wouldn't want that line to get loose during a storm some night and discover my Gennie flapping away to shreds in the wind the next morning. As it is I have been tying a short rope sling around my roller furler when I put my boat up on the mooring. My friend Wayne uses a cable to lock his roller furler around the stay on his Seaward 22. Also, his control line horn cleat is placed near his stern rail.
