rig tensions
mario;I have owned a 1979 30 for 18yrs. and i can tell you a lot about the rig as we used to race it heavily. first there arn't any actual published tension numbers. the only thing available is the mast rake settings. one very important item is, do not, and i repeat ,do not go by any tuning articles for tension settings. most of them will say to tune the rig tight enough that when hard on the wind the lee shrouds should not be slack. for this boat if you tighten the rig that tight you will definitely damage the boat. the way that o'day built the bulkheads for attaching the chain plates to the hull there is a certain amount of flex in the hull which allows the lee shrouds to go slack. if the boat is on the hard you can get a rough idea of how tight to make it by tensioning the shrouds and looking at the hull and watching for any deformation. when you see a slight amount of deflection (other wise known as beer canning) you are as tight as you dare. the lowers arn't tensioned as tight as the cap shrouds. the reason for this is that when hard on the wind the mast will fall off and you want it to still be straight. this boat has basically a telly pole for a mast, so don't try to put any prebend in it with your lower forward shrouds. as to head stay tension simply try to minimise head stay sag when hard on the wind. using a 155 with about 10 to 12 knots apparent wind speed i have about 6 to 8" sag. that's about as little as you are going to get. now after you tuned it while on the hard, you need to go sailing to make final adj. when hard on the wind you need to sight up the front of the mast to see it falls off straight. if it has a hook or bow in it then you need to tighten or loosen the appropriate shrouds.now a very biggy; a friend of mine had a 81 O'Day 30 and he didn't pay attention to the chain plates and had water infiltration in to the balsa cored deck and consequently had a rotted deck. in the end he essentially gave away the boat when he sold it.now as to hardware. all the rigging fittings are off the shelf available at any marine store.Hope this helpsCapn jimS/V Que Pasa?
